Stop by to learn about the different types of plants that would have been important to the farm family and how they would have prepared their spring garden. We’ll have a variety of demonstrations throughout the Farm including cooking\, blacksmithing\, planting\, activities for children\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Season of Valor. Shot on location in Belgium\, this film chronicles the story of World War II’s Battle of the Bulge\, where American forces repulsed a massive\, counterattack by the German army in Belgium’s Ardennes region. The battle resulted in more American casualties than any other engagement in the European Theater of World War II. Sir Winston Churchill\, the British prime minister during World War II\, said of the Battle of the Bulge: “This [was] undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the war and will\, I believe\, be regarded as an ever-famous American victory.” \nProduced by historian Rod Gragg\, the film features on-camera commentary by South Carolina veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and historic archival footage from World War II\, including film footage captured from the German army during the battle. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, April 14th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2021. SUMMARY:The Morris Brothers & Dixie Station to perform traditional bluegrass concert
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a free traditional bluegrass concert by The Morris Brothers on Saturday\, April 17th\, at 1:00 PM. The Morris Brothers have been playing music together for 49 years. Originally from West Virginia\, they now reside in the Aynor/Cool Springs area of South Carolina. The brothers started playing bluegrass when they were young boys growing up in the hollows of West Virginia. They enjoy playing bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel and play regularly in Horry County. Band members include Mike Morris of Aynor\, SC on vocals and banjo\, Matt Morris from Cool Springs\, SC on vocals and guitar\, William Hardee from Loris\, SC on vocals and fiddle\, Jason Todd from Loris\, SC on mandolin\, and Tammy Holt of Conway\, SC on the bass. \nThe concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV.  The name\, Melvin Horace Purvis\, to many people today\, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name\, and over 260\,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis\, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name\, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day\, including John Dillinger\, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide\, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Flora & Fauna of the Carolina Bays
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home\, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Stop by the McCown Auditorium at 1 PM on April 24th to learn more about some of the wildlife of the Carolina Bays with Horry County Museum Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020\, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC.
