DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by Dr. Jeffrey Camper on Saturday\, October 16th. Using photographs and live specimens\, Dr. Camper will discuss the different snake species that are found throughout South Carolina. \nJeffrey Camper was born in Aurora\, IL and began catching garter snakes at seven years old. He received a BS in Zoology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale\, an MA in Biology from Drake University\, and a Ph.D. in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University. Dr. Camper has been teaching genetics\, evolutionary biology\, comparative anatomy & herpetology at Francis Marion University since 1994. \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. SUMMARY:Sherman Carmichael: South Carolina Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program on October 23rd by local author Sherman Carmichael on eerie stories from South Carolina’s past. \nSherman Carmichael has been interested in ghosts\, UFO’s and other strange things since an early age. Many of the stories he wrote throughout his school years were on the strange and unknown. At the age of 16 he subscribed to Fate Magazine and that led him to start investigating the paranormal. Carmichael has visited many sites with a haunted history. In his early years he wrote many stories on South Carolina ghosts for several newspapers. With hundreds of folders of research Carmichael decided to write a book. In March 2011 Forgotten Tales of South Carolina was published by The History Press in Charleston\, S.C. Other books by Carmichael include Legends & Lore of South Carolina\, Mysterious Tales of Western North Carolina\, Mysterious Georgia\, Mysterious South Carolina\, and Eerie South Carolina \nThe program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway S.C. Visitors of all ages are invited to join us Saturday\, October 30th from 9 AM until 12 PM to learn all about how corn was grown and used in our farm communities. Visitors can try their hand at shelling corn and learn about the different ways that corn would be cooked in the farmhouse. Bring the kids by to make toys out of corn cobs and corn husks too! We’ll be having a costume contest at 11:30\, so parents\, have your kids dressed like a farmer and be ready to tell us what their favorite crop grown in Horry County is and why! \nThe L.W.
