SUMMARY:Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Local Superstitions and Ghost Stories
DESCRIPTION:With Halloween on the horizon\, October is prime time for spooky stories. The Horry/Georgetown Area has a long history and\, with the passage of time\, stories are bound to arise. Whether you’ve heard about the supposed haunting of local landmarks or just noticed a lot of blue ceilings on porches\, there is history and folklore that runs deep in many of these local legends. Join us to learn more about some of these local ghost stories and superstitions. Join us on October 8th at 1 pm to learn about some of these local hauntings and superstitions with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy. \nAbigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum Staff as the Technical Assistant in 2020. She has recently been promoted to Curator as of 2022. \nThe program will be held in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Hazel slammed into the Grand Strand on October 15\, 1954 as a category four hurricane on a full moon high tide and forever changed our area. SUMMARY:Snow Wolf to perform the Native American Flute at the Horry County Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a free Native American Flute concert by Snow Wolf on Saturday\, October 15th\, at 1:00 PM. Those attending will experience the healing sounds of the Native American Flute and the Lore around this legendary instrument. Snow Wolf is a Native American style Flute Musician of Shoshone and Mohawk descent. Originally from Idaho\, he spent much of his childhood in South Carolina and New Mexico. His love for the sounds of Native American Flute music began early in life. While living in New Mexico he spent much of his time in the desert visiting historical places and learning the lore of nearby tribes\, most notably the stories of the Kokopelli (the traveling flute player). Many years passed before the instrument came to him in a very old traditional way. Soon after\, he set out on the road as a truck driver and taught himself to play the instrument. Along his travels\, he met others who also shared his passion for the Native American Flute. \nSnow Wolf has released 4 full length concept albums telling his own story of the life of a traveling flute player set several hundred years in the past.  He has also been featured in the song “Trail of Tears” by Tennessee Outlaw Country. \nThe concert will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. SUMMARY:Donald Kirkpatrick to give lecture on Fossils of the Pee Dee Region
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on October 22nd on vertebrate fossils of the Upper Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection\, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in\, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections\, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have. \nDonald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment\, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas\, Lawrence\, Kansas\, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy\, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers\, the National Science Teachers Association\, the National Center for Science Education\, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations\, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science\, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology\, and the Paleontological Research Institution. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. DESCRIPTION:We’re talking corn at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! Visitors of all ages are invited to join us Saturday\, October 29th from 9 AM until 12 PM to learn all about how corn was grown and used in our farm communities. Visitors can try their hand at shelling corn and learn about the different ways that corn would be cooked in the farmhouse. Kids are also invited to join in on historic corn themed activities! We’ll be having a costume contest at 11:30\, so parents\, have your kids dressed like a farmer and be ready to tell us what their favorite crop grown in Horry County is and why! \nThe L.W.
