SUMMARY:Swamp Fox: Francis Marion & the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series begins with the locally produced film Swamp Fox: Francis Marion & the American Revolution. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg\, this film follows the life of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion from his birth in 1732 near Monck’s Corner\, SC to his experiences as a sailor\, and service in the French and Indian War\, where he learned the ambush fighting techniques that would frustrate the British in the Revolutionary War and earn him the nickname ‘Swamp Fox’. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, January 4th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. SUMMARY:Incident at Mars Bluff
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Incident at Mars Bluff.  This 30 minute film\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, explores how the world’s most technologically advanced air power came to drop a three-ton nuclear device on a small town in South Carolina. Interviews with the surviving members of the Gregg family will reveal how the incident affected them then and to this day. SUMMARY:Smokehouse Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 21st between 9 AM and 12 PM at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! Winter was the time of year for curing pork on the farm and a season when the family was dependent on home preserved foods during the cold winter months. Demonstrations by our staff and volunteers include the carving and preparation of pork\, salting and curing in the smokehouse\, making lye soap\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThe L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. SUMMARY:Virginia Ellison: What’s in Your Attic?
DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Virginia Ellison at 1:00 PM on January 28th. Ellison will discuss the benefits and procedures of donating materials to an archives or museum\, how to navigate the donation process\, including which questions to ask and what factors to consider when donating a family heirloom\, and basic preservation that you can do at home. \nVirginia Ellison is the VP of Collections and COO of the South Carolina Historical Society where she oversees all archival and museum operations. She attended the College of Charleston\, where she earned a BS in anthropology and then received her MLIS from the University of South Carolina in 2011. She attended the Georgia Archives Institute in June 2012\, and received her certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists in 2016. Virginia is past president of the Charleston Archives\, Libraries & Museums Council (CALM) and serves as a District Representative for the Confederation of South Carolina Local Historical Societies (CSCLHS). She’s been with the society for ten years. \nThe lecture will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526.
