Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film tells the story of a time when our climate was cooler and the plants and animals were much different than today. A time when great ice sheets covered the northern areas of what later became the United States. A time when early humans were coming to chert quarries in what is now Allendale County\, South Carolina. SUMMARY:Quilts of Valor Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by Quilts of Valor members from the Conway Quilt Guild on Saturday\, November 4th at 1 PM.  The quilts to be awarded will be on display in the Museum beginning October 6th. \nThe mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans\, touched by war\, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003\, Catherine Roberts\, the founder of the QOVF\, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night\, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed\, shaking. In her dream\, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter\, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red\, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. Since 2003\, the foundation\, now a national organization\, has awarded over 300\,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. \nTo nominate a veteran for a Quilt of Valor\, visit www.qovf.org. \nThis program is free and open to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway\, SC. SUMMARY:Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Born to Rebel\, Driven to Excel. Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV\, this 30 minute film biography tells the story of South Carolinian\, Dr. Benjamin Mays. \nBenjamin Mays\, from Epworth\, South Carolina\, saw the racism and forced segregation of life around him and decided to challenge it with education and religion. Against the advice of his father\, Mays pursued a formal education and rose to the top of his class\, becoming Dean of Religion at Howard University\, and later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He became president of Morehouse College in 1940\, and his influence on civil rights and education for the next three decades reached far and wide. He met with Mahatma Gandhi\, led Atlanta’s desegregation effort\, and convinced Gone with the Wind author Margaret Mitchell to (secretly) sponsor students. He was mentor and spiritual father to Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, who credited him as his inspiration for entering the ministry. King selected Mays to give his eulogy in the event of his death\, a task Mays fulfilled. Interviewees include Andrew Young\, Hank Aaron\, Mays’ great niece Dr. Marshalyn Yeargin-Allsopp\, and Dr. Robert Franklin. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, November 15th\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2023. SUMMARY:Syrup Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Syrup Day at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm \nA large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall\, sugar cane was gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice was squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us at the Farm Saturday\, November 18th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games\, cooking on a wood burning stove\, and more! \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:The Baruchs of Hobcaw
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Baruchs of Hobcaw\, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. \nIn 1718\, 17\,500 acres of pristine land in Georgetown County became a colonial land grant\, or barony\, from the King of England to one of the Lords Proprietors. The Native Americans called it “hobcaw\,” meaning between the waters. Purchased by Bernard Baruch in 1905\, Hobcaw Barony eventually passed into the hands of Baruch’s daughter\, Belle\, who created a foundation to protect it from development. This film tells the story of the Baruchs and Hobcaw Barony\, which is today home to USC’s Baruch Marine Field Laboratory and Clemson’s Belle W.
