DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Discovering Dave\, Spirit Captured in Clay. Directed and produced by George Wingard and Mark Albertin and released through the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and Scrapbook Video\, this film tells the story of David Drake\, a slave potter from Edgefield\, South Carolina. David was one of the first African American slaves to sign many of his works\, which included jars and pitchers. In addition to producing thousands of pieces of pottery\, David also wrote poetry. \nThe film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM\, Wednesday\, October 2nd\, at the Horry County Museum\, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. \nThe Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2024. DESCRIPTION:The Horry County Museum presents a program on Lowcountry scandals by author Jason Ryan on Saturday\, October 5th\, at 1:00 PM. The Charleston author will discuss his book Jackpot\, which chronicles the adventures and downfall of the “gentlemen” marijuana smugglers of South Carolina\, as well as his recent book Swamp Kings\, which details the history of the Murdaugh family of South Carolina and the crimes of disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh. \nJason Ryan is a nonfiction author living in Charleston\, SC. He is a former reporter for The Beaufort Gazette and The State newspaper. His books include Jackpot: High Times\, High Seas and the Sting that Launched the War on Drugs (2011)\, Hell-Bent: One Man’s Crusade to Crush the Hawaiian Mob (2014)\, Race to Hawaii: The 1927 Dole Derby and the Thrilling First Flights that Opened the Pacific (2018)\, and Swamp Kings: The Murdaugh Family of South Carolina and a Century of Backwoods Power (April 2024). \nThe program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street\, Conway\, SC 29526. Comprised of volunteer members and performers\, Saltwater Chamber Orchestra boasts a robust season of concerts with quality music performances. The group began as a club in the Coastal Carolina OLLI program in Myrtle Beach\, SC\, and is now an independent chamber string orchestra. Their repertoire consists of classical and show/pop selections\, as well as selections for various holidays. Throughout the years since its founding\, the organization has performed along the Grand Strand coast of South Carolina\, sharing the comforting sounds of strings in the palmetto community.
