The People Who Take up Serpents

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film, The People Who Take up Serpents. A classic documentary shot in 1974 when Stan Woodward served as Filmmaker in residence at the South Carolina Arts Commission. He headed a groundbreaking program that funded SC filmmakers making their own personal works. Gretchen Robinson’s film on the story of the members of the Holiness Church of God in Jesus’ Name in Greenville, SC-a snake handling church-tells the story of how they responded after a sister church in Newport, Tennessee was padlocked by order of the State Attorney General after two preachers had died from strychnine while trying to prove the authenticity of their faith.

The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 27th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
