The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolina Ghosts & Legends Vol. III. This 30 minute film explores two famous ghosts with roots on Pawley’s Island, “The Gray Man” and “Alice of the Hermitage.” The program also investigates “Bubba the Ghost” at the South Carolina State Museum and the ghosts of the University of South Carolina’s Longstreet Theatre. The Carolina Stories crew travels to Charleston to unearth tales of buried treasure and other legendary pirate stories.

The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by the Conway Quilt Guild Quilts of Valor Group on Saturday, November 2nd at 11 AM. The quilts to be awarded will be on display beginning October 23rd at the Horry County Museum.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans, touched by war, with a comforting and healing quilt. Since 2003, the foundation, now a national organization, has awarded nearly 400,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. The Conway Quilt Guild has been recognized as one of the newest QOV groups, seeking to expand recognition to veterans in the northern and western parts of Horry County. This 30 minute film takes viewers on an archeological adventure at the Topper dig site in Allendale County, South Carolina. Famous for Clovis and pre-Clovis artifacts, there is evidence that may support the theory that a comet suddenly wiped out the Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. World renowned scientists offer their opinions about these significant first Americans, where they came from, how they lived, and what may have been their fate.

This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, details Francis Marion’s partisan campaigns during the American Revolution in South Carolina and paints a mosaic of what life was like in those years and how Marion’s participation led to the birth of modern day guerilla warfare as well as the liberation of our country.

See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall, sugar cane was gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice was squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us Saturday, November 16th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games, cooking on a wood burning stove, and more!

Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film tells the story of South Carolina human and civil rights matriarch, Modjeska Monteith Simkins. This classic Carolina story is a portrait of an activist who laid the groundwork for some of the most significant civil rights cases in US history.

The Horry County Museum presents a program on the German Prisoner of War Camp in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, November 23rd, at 1:00 PM. German POWs were brought to Myrtle Beach during WWII to supplement the work force in the timber industry, on farms and at the town’s Army Air Corps airfield. Myrtle Beach History Tours Creator and Narrator, Kathryn Cox Hedgepath, will share what it was like for them here from 1944–1946.
Myrtle Beach native, Kathryn Cox Hedgepath, is the creator and narrator of the Myrtle Beach History Trolley and Step-On Tours. She has traveled to forty countries on six continents and uses her experience to convey our local history through a world lens. Kathryn returned home from NYC in 2002 to marry her beloved husband, Jenks, after a career in television and publishing (and even worked in Space Shuttle Operations at NASA Headquarters in DC for a semester before starting graduate school at Georgetown University). Her first career job was as Personal Assistant to television icon and wildlife expert, Jim Fowler, of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom fame. Her dad, Myrtle Beach’s first veterinarian, arranged the job interview when Jim Fowler spoke at a veterinary conference in Myrtle Beach. She is proud to be able to trace her family history in Horry County back to the Pre-Revolutionary War years, and enjoys sharing our local history with visitors, newcomers, and locals.

The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Patriot Dream: The Story of the Pilgrims. This locally produced documentary tells the story of the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, whose arrival in America in 1620 shaped the founding of the nation. Shot on location in the Pilgrim country of Great Britain and in the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts, it traces the extraordinary story of the Pilgrims from their troubles in 17th century England through their escape to Holland and their dramatic voyage to America.
