The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the SCETV film Uncommon Folk.
There are some artists that fall outside of the definition of fine art. Sometimes referred to as folk, outsider, visionary or memory artists, most are driven to create something that has a special meaning to them. Some use objects from their own backyard, or illustrate personal visions or cultural history, while others use art to cope with life. Some are celebrated locally, while the work of others goes unseen until their deaths. One thing they have in common is that they are destined to leave their impression on this world through their work. This film takes a look at some of South Carolina’s unique self-taught artists including Maxi McConnell Eades, Reverend Johnnie Simmons, L.C. Carson, Sam Doyle, Ernest Lee, and Margaret Robbins.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 15th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Join us Saturday, May 18th, for a free 30 minute activity at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. In this session, we’ll celebrate the warmer weather with a fun, and tasty, science experiment by making ice cream in a bag.

The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 AM-4 PM and is located at 2279 Harris Short Cut Road, Conway, SC 29526.

The Horry County Museum will host a showing of the film The Major of St. Lo on Saturday, May 18th at 1 PM. Produced by SCETV and the United Bank Center for Military and Veteran Studies, this film tells the story of Major Thomas D. Howie and the heroism he displayed as he led his men into battle in Normandy, France.
A native of Abbeville, South Carolina, Howie attended college at the Citadel in Charleston, SC. After graduating in 1929, he taught English and coached sports at Staunton Military Academy in Virginia. While in Staunton, he also joined the Virginia National Guard and entered active duty in February of 1941. He was promoted to Captain in 1942 and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day June 6, 1944. In July he was assigned to command the 3rd Battalion and personally led the attack against German forces outside of St. Lo where his heroism earned him the nickname “The Major of St. Lo”.

The 2024 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with We Have a Story to Tell: 350 Years of the South Carolina National Guard. Part of the Carolina Stories series by South Carolina ETV, this film features a partnership between the SC Military Museum and the SC Military History Foundation to tell the stories of the SC Army National Guard and the SC Air National Guard. The Guard’s history is long and rich, dating back to 1670, and its service to the United States and to South Carolina is enduring. See how the Guard has served both at home and abroad throughout its history.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 22nd, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
