Experience life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us for Sawmill Saturday from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM on March 30th to see the sawmill in operation. There were, and still are, a lot of trees being grown in Horry County for timber production. In the early twentieth century, most communities had a sawmill in the area to get the trees from their forest turned into boards. Farm staff and designated volunteers will operate the sawmill and discuss its set-up after it was moved to the farm.

The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by Joy Brown on Saturday, March 30th, on the work of the Nature Conservancy’s Living Shoreline work and the North Coast Resilience Project.

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Finding Clovis. This 30 minute film takes viewers on an archeological adventure at the Topper dig site in Allendale County, South Carolina. Famous for Clovis and pre-Clovis artifacts, there is recent evidence that may support the theory that a comet suddenly wiped out the Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. World renowned scientists offer their opinions about these significant first Americans, where they came from, how they lived, and what may have been their fate.

Join us on April 4th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. Wayne will demonstrate a variety of ways that chicken would have been prepared in order to make the most use of the bird to feed what would have been a large family.

A free, hour long, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration.

Enjoy a day of planting and plowing on Saturday, April 6th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. The L. W. Paul Living History Farm is gearing up the mule to set tobacco and plant corn for the summer. Join Farm staff as they re-create life on the family farm from 1900-1955. Demonstrations planned for the day include setting tobacco plants, planting a spring garden, wood working, grinding grits and meal, blacksmithing, cooking on a wood stove, butter making, and more. Food, snacks and gifts are available for purchase in the visitor’s center. Find a memory of your own, or make a new one with the family.

Join us on April 10th from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM for a program on gardening where visitors can learn about growing a garden using heirloom varieties of vegetables and only organic fertilizers. At this program, visitors can join in and help finish planting the remaining part of the summer garden.

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Lions in Blue & Gray. This locally produced documentary tells the story of Civil War generals Joshua Chamberlain and Stonewall Jackson.
As Colonel of the 20th Maine Infantry, Joshua Chamberlain is credited by many as saving the battle of Gettysburg for the Union Army through his defense of Little Round Top. Stonewall Jackson was renowned as a southern military genius and was known as General Robert E. Lee’s “right arm” before his death following the battle of Chancellorsville.

The 2019 CCU & OLLI Film Series begins with the locally produced film Gettysburg: On Fields of Fire & Valor on April 13th at 1:00 PM. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg, this film chronicles the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, which was the decisive battle of the American Civil War. At the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1-3, 1863, more than 95,000 Northern troops led by General George Meade engaged in battle with approximately 75,000 Southern soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee. Meade’s Army of the Potomac was defeated by Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia on the battle’s opening day, but held off Lee’s attacks for the next two days, and the battle ended in a major Northern victory. Lee’s army was forced to retreat back to Virginia, and although bloody warfare continued for two more years, the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War.
