Join us Saturday, October 18th, for a free 30 minute activity at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. Children will learn about indigo as a cash crop in South Carolina. They’ll also design and dye their own small bag to take home.

Join us at the Horry County Museum on Saturday, October 18th at 1 PM for a presentation on Native American Perseverance in South Carolina by Joshua Shumak. This presentation explores the resilience and enduring contributions of Native American communities in South Carolina, from the historic Lowcountry to regions beyond. Participants will learn about cultural preservation, community leadership, and the ongoing efforts of state-recognized and tribal communities to sustain their heritage, traditions, and influence in contemporary society.
Joshua Shumak is Vice Chief of the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians and Native American Affairs Program Coordinator for the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs. A nationally respected advocate and educator, he has received multiple Keys to the City and became one of the youngest recipients of the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. His work has earned numerous national and international awards for leadership, cultural preservation, and public service.
In 2024, Joshua made history as the first representative of a South Carolina–recognized tribe to speak at the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva, highlighting the resilience and challenges of Native communities. A sought-after speaker, including at TEDx Charleston 2025, he continues to build bridges between tribal nations, government, and global partners while advocating for Indigenous rights and cultural heritage.
This program is supported by South Carolina Humanities. The mission of South Carolina Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. This not-for-profit organization presents and/or supports literary initiatives, lectures, exhibits, festivals, publications, oral history projects, videos and other humanities-based experiences that reach more than 250,000 citizens annually. South Carolina Humanities receives funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as corporate, foundation and individual donors. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from throughout the state.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolina Ghosts & Legends Vol. II. This 30 minute film takes a spine-tingling look at the Palmetto State’s ghosts, legends, and other chilling mysteries. From the scenic Upstate to the moss-canopied streets of the Coast, ETV goes on hair-raising jaunts through cemeteries, a college bell tower, a haunted railroad, and other fascinating sites, uncovering the stories that have captivated listeners for decades.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, October 22nd, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Visitors of all ages are invited to join us Saturday, October 25th from 9 AM-12 PM at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm as we bring in our fall harvest. The public is invited to help us dig up our sweet potato crop, gather cotton, and learn how to make corn husk dolls. Learn about the importance of various seasonal crops on the family farm and see how they would have been used, from cooking to making toys for children.
The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolina Ghosts & Legends Vol. III. This 30 minute film explores two famous ghosts with roots on Pawley’s Island, “The Gray Man” and “Alice of the Hermitage.” The program also investigates “Bubba the Ghost” at the South Carolina State Museum and the ghosts of the University of South Carolina’s Longstreet Theatre. The Carolina Stories crew travels to Charleston to unearth tales of buried treasure and other legendary pirate stories.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Snowbird Cherokees. Deep in the mountains of western North Carolina is the isolated Cherokee community of Snowbird. The ancestors of these Native Americans managed to flee U.S. soldiers in 1838 when the Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. This film explores the daily lives and culture of the present-day Cherokees, while looking into the fascinating history and culture of these Native Americans.

Join us Saturday, November 8th, for a free 30 minute activity at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. Veteran’s Day is right around the corner and we’re showing our gratitude to those who have served in the military by decorating quilt squares. These squares will be sewn into quilts and given to local veterans through the Quilts of Valor Foundation, all ages are welcome to participate.
