Have you ever wondered how laundry was done before modern washing machines? Visit the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to try your hand at doing laundry the old fashioned way on April 27th from 9 AM until 12 PM and see how clothes would have been cleaned using a scrub board and wash pot.
The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway, SC. For more information, call the L. W. Join us for free 30 minute Saturday activities at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for one of four half hour sessions starting at 9 AM. Group sizes will be limited to 5 children per session to help ensure social distancing. On May 1st children will use recycled materials to make feeders for our feathered friends. We’ll look at a few different ways that we can make birdfeeders using common materials found around the house. The Horry County Museum will screen Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection Saturday, May 1st at 1 PM. Part of the SCETV Carolina Stories Series, Beyond Barbados traces the historic influence of the small island of Barbados on the wealth and success of a place 2,000 miles away: the Carolinas. Scholars examine the cultural exchange that impacted the development of language, food and architecture, and recount how the economic and governmental systems created, tested and proven by the West Indies sugar industry forged the prosperity and power of the Carolinas – chief among them the institution of slavery. |

The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Between the Waters. This 30 minute film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, shares the history of Hobcaw, named after a Native American word meaning ‘between the waters’. Join us to learn the Native American and African American history of Hobcaw as well as the history of environmental conservation that continues at the site. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, May 5th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway. Paul Living History Farm will host a free hands-on workshop on indigo dyeing on May 8th at 2 PM. Participants will learn about the history of indigo in South Carolina and have the opportunity to design and dye their own handkerchief. Space is limited to 15 people, pre-registration is required. This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, takes a light-hearted look at favorite places and homegrown things, spanning the alphabet to showcase all that South Carolina is and has to offer. From the ACE Basin and the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to the Yorktown aircraft carrier and Zentrum (BMW’s visitor’s center), South Carolina A to Z is a vivid look at the unique offerings of South Carolina. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg, this film follows the life of Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion from his birth in 1732 near Monck’s Corner, SC to his experiences as a sailor, and service in the French and Indian War, where he learned the ambush fighting techniques that would frustrate the British in the Revolutionary War and earn him the nickname ‘Swamp Fox’. |

Warmer weather means the start of summer at the Grand Strand but it also means that hurricane season is coming. Join Thomas Bell, Public Information Officer with Horry County Emergency Management, as he discusses what you need to do to be prepared. Visitors will also have a look at what the Emergency Operations Center does during a storm to ensure Horry County is ready for impacts. Whether you are new to the area, or just need a few refreshers on preparedness, this presentation will provide you with steps to get through the season. Come with questions! |

The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Uncommon Courage: The D-Day Battle of Graignes. This documentary tells the remarkable story of the little known battle of Graignes described as the “Alamo of D-Day”. When the D-Day invasion of France began on June 6, 1944, approximately 180 American paratroopers were accidentally dropped far from their drop zone, and landed outside the small village of Graignes in Normandy, right in the path of a major German counterattack. Assisted by French villagers, the American paratroopers at Graignes made a courageous stand against a force of German S.S. troops that was ten time their size. |
