The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hard to Say Goodbye: The Official Documentary of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. For almost 100 years the Myrtle Beach Pavilion played a beloved role in Myrtle Beach history. From its origins as a meeting place and dance hall to the arrival of famed general manager Earl Husted and its expansion into a world famous amusement park, this official documentary, commissioned by park owner Burroughs & Chapin Company and accomplished in union with Myrtle Beach’s award-winning Stages Video Productions, captures the magic and memories that made the Myrtle Beach Amusement Park a family favorite for generations.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 28th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gumption, Grit & Glory: The Battle of Kings Mountain. Shot on site at Kings Mountain National Historic Park, this locally produced documentary tells how the ‘Over-Mountain Men’, a group of Scots-Irish volunteers from the backcountry of the Carolinas, Virginia and Tennessee, helped to change the course of the American Revolution.

The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, October 5th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

With Halloween on the horizon, October is prime time for spooky stories. The Horry/Georgetown Area has a long history and, with the passage of time, stories are bound to arise. Whether you’ve heard about the supposed haunting of local landmarks or just noticed a lot of blue ceilings on porches, there is history and folklore that runs deep in many of these local legends. Join us to learn more about some of these local ghost stories and superstitions. Join us on October 8th at 1 pm to learn about some of these local hauntings and superstitions with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy.
Abigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum Staff as the Technical Assistant in 2020. She has recently been promoted to Curator as of 2022.

Hurricane Hazel slammed into the Grand Strand on October 15, 1954 as a category four hurricane on a full moon high tide and forever changed our area. This film, locally produced by Stages Video, reconstructs the impact of Hurricane Hazel on Myrtle Beach and Horry County through interviews with survivors, archival photographs and film footage.

The Horry County Museum presents a free Native American Flute concert by Snow Wolf on Saturday, October 15th, at 1:00 PM. Those attending will experience the healing sounds of the Native American Flute and the Lore around this legendary instrument. Snow Wolf is a Native American style Flute Musician of Shoshone and Mohawk descent. Originally from Idaho, he spent much of his childhood in South Carolina and New Mexico. His love for the sounds of Native American Flute music began early in life. While living in New Mexico he spent much of his time in the desert visiting historical places and learning the lore of nearby tribes, most notably the stories of the Kokopelli (the traveling flute player). Many years passed before the instrument came to him in a very old traditional way. Soon after, he set out on the road as a truck driver and taught himself to play the instrument. Along his travels, he met others who also shared his passion for the Native American Flute.
Snow Wolf has released 4 full length concept albums telling his own story of the life of a traveling flute player set several hundred years in the past. He has also been featured in the song "Trail of Tears" by Tennessee Outlaw Country.

This 30 minute film tracks the legends and lore from South Carolina’s past in a haunting journey from the Old Exchange Dungeon in Charleston to the Abbeville Opera House in the Upstate. Search for the Lands End Ghost that walks the Carolina coast and maybe the most famous of all, the Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp.

The Horry County Museum presents a lecture by Donald Kirkpatrick at 1:00 PM on October 22nd on vertebrate fossils of the Upper Cretaceous (Age of Dinosaurs) Period in the Pee Dee. Featuring fossils from his own collection, Mr. Kirkpatrick will discuss what areas he looks for fossils in, and the types that can be found in the Pee Dee. The public is invited to bring fossils from their personal collections, share stories of where they found their items and discuss what they may have.
Donald Kirkpatrick received a Bachelor of Science in Geology from James Madison University in 1979. During his junior year at JMU he was selected by the Smithsonian Institution to spend his senior year as a Museum Study Appointee to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History. Following his appointment, Kirkpatrick spent two years at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, taking graduate biology courses and researching fossil vertebrates. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Don recently retired from the Marion County School District where he taught for 20+ years. Kirkpatrick is a member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Center for Science Education, and the South Carolina Science Council. In addition to these educational associations, he is also a member of the South Carolina Academy of Science, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, and the Paleontological Research Institution.

This 30 minute film takes a spine-tingling look at the Palmetto State’s ghosts, legends, and other chilling mysteries. From the scenic Upstate to the moss-canopied streets of the Coast, ETV goes on hair-raising jaunts through cemeteries, a college bell tower, a haunted railroad, and other fascinating sites, uncovering the stories that have captivated listeners for decades.

We’re talking corn at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! Visitors of all ages are invited to join us Saturday, October 29th from 9 AM until 12 PM to learn all about how corn was grown and used in our farm communities. Visitors can try their hand at shelling corn and learn about the different ways that corn would be cooked in the farmhouse. Kids are also invited to join in on historic corn themed activities! We’ll be having a costume contest at 11:30, so parents, have your kids dressed like a farmer and be ready to tell us what their favorite crop grown in Horry County is and why!

The ancestors of these Native Americans managed to flee U.S. soldiers in 1838 when the Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. This film explores the daily lives and culture of the present-day Cherokees, while looking into the fascinating history and culture of these Native Americans.

The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented on Saturday, November 5th at 1 PM.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans, touched by war, with a comforting and healing quilt. In 2003, Catherine Roberts, the founder of the QOVF, had a son deployed to Iraq. She struggled with how to stay busy and keep her mind busy while he was in harm’s way. One night, she had a dream where she saw a man sitting on the side of a bed, shaking. In her dream, a quilt was placed around his shoulders and he seemed to be comforted. As a nurse and quilter, Roberts then decided she would make and send quilts to Kandahar. Each stretcher that had a wounded veteran got a red, white and blue quilt placed on their stretcher. Since 2003, the foundation, now a national organization, has awarded over 300,000 quilts to veterans.
