Don Sweeper: Scrooge According to Gullah

December 15, 2018 @ 1:00 pm

The Horry County Museum will host “Scrooge According to Gullah” by Donald Sweeper. In this performance, Mr. Sweeper brings to life the old greedy money miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, from Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol.  This reenactment has been adopted for the stage in a Chautauqua performance style in which the audience will interpret Scrooge as someone they personally know, (maybe in their own family) or have known in the past.

“Scrooge according to Gullah”, is portrayed by Donald Sweeper in the rich Gullah tradition. His voice diction and array of Gullah words reveals a tradition that is vanishing as time goes by. Mr. Sweeper was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, and grew up in Eutawville. He graduated from Roberts High school in Holly Hill and Voorhees College in Denmark, SC. He has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in both public and private schools in South Carolina.  He has traveled across the width and breathe of the United States reenacting famous African Americans such as Civil War hero and Congressman Robert Smalls. Mr. Sweeper is an authoritarian on the Gullah Culture and its history and teaches Gullah translations and does storytelling for all age groups. He often reads scripture and do interpretations from the New Testament Gullah Bible.  Donald Sweeper is married to his wife Deloris and they have two adult sons and three grandsons.  He currently resides in Columbia, South Carolina.
