The Horry County Museum presents a program by Alan Todd, Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project, on Saturday, June 14th, at 1:00 PM. Horry County is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, which has led to unprecedented construction and demolition. As older structures are rapidly demolished and cleared for new construction, the local area’s inherently valuable used building materials, structural histories, and expert trade skills are unnecessarily lost to the landfill. In contrast, the economic model of deconstruction provides a ready solution to this unnecessary waste and loss. Deconstruction is the careful disassembly of structures, an alternative to traditional demolition. In this process, building materials can be salvaged and reused, histories researched and archived, and traditional skills revived for future generations. Alan Todd will discuss the process of establishing a deconstruction industry in our area and the environmental and economic benefits it brings.
Alan Todd is Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building material reuse and trades preservation. A professor at Coastal Carolina University and trained archaeologist, Alan's life's work culminates in saving old-growth lumber from landfills, archiving the histories of family homes, and reviving traditional building crafts through education and community development.

Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of those enslaved from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War, emancipation and hurricanes. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today.

The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by the Conway Quilt Guild Quilts of Valor Group on Saturday, June 21st at 11 AM.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans, touched by war, with a comforting and healing quilt. Since 2003, the foundation, now a national organization, has awarded over 400,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. The Conway Quilt Guild has been recognized as one of the newest QOV groups, seeking to expand recognition to veterans in the northern and western parts of Horry County. There are some artists that fall outside of the definition of fine art. Sometimes referred to as folk, outsider, visionary or memory artists, most are driven to create something that has a special meaning to them. Some use objects from their own backyard, or illustrate personal visions or cultural history, while others use art to cope with life. Some are celebrated locally, while the work of others goes unseen until their deaths. One thing they have in common is that they are destined to leave their impression on this world through their work. This film takes a look at some of South Carolina’s unique self-taught artists including Maxi McConnell Eades, Reverend Johnnie Simmons, L.C. Carson, Sam Doyle, Ernest Lee, and Margaret Robbins.

Join Ben Burroughs, the Director of the Horry County Archives Center at Coastal Carolina University, on Saturday, June 28th, as he discusses the history of Conway’s City Hall. This lecture will feature the building’s origins and evolution over the past 200 years, along with some interesting anecdotes associated with the building.
Ben is the director of the Horry County Archives Center, established at Coastal Carolina University by the Horry County Higher Education Commission in 2006. The center focuses on researching the history of Horry County and surrounding counties, including the history of Coastal Carolina University. The center works with local history-minded groups to find significant historical material, preserve it and make it accessible to the public via digitization.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the locally produced film, Birth of a Nation: The Making of the Declaration of Independence. Produced and narrated by historian Rod Gragg, this film chronicles the creation of one of the most important documents in American history.
