Housed in a converted Post Office adjacent to the Historic District of downtown
Conway, the museum features monthly exhibits by local artists in addition to
its historical and regional exhibits.
The central theme underlying the exhibits is the wide range of environmental
conditions found in Horry County and how its inhabitants, from prehistoric to
present, have adapted to these local conditions.
The museum features a variety of materials from old tools and photographs to
miniatures of industries such as those producing tar and turpentine. Exhibits
include farming tools and implements, household items and clothing, items
from an old country store, local crafts - both historical and modern, and
wildlife specimens and photographs.
The museum offers a variety of programs on site and has outreach for people of
all ages. It also offers walking tours of Conway's picturesque historic
district.
The museum is free and open to the public. Each month the museum has
special programs available to
the public so check back here for updates or keep an eye for posts in local
media. For information on specific tours or programs, please contact the museum.
(pronounced O-ree) is one of the largest counties in the Eastern
United States at over 1100 sq. miles and is drained by two major river systems,
the Waccamaw and the Pee Dee. This low, sandy land along the coastal plain of
South Carolina supports dense stands of long-leaf pine which fostered the areas
first eonomic growth in the production of Naval Stores. Today, the counties
major industry is tourism with the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach attracting
millions of visitors annually.

William Van Auken Greene was a photographer that moved to the Aynor area in the
early 1930's. He spent almost twenty years in the area photographing people.
What makes these images so interesting is the wide scope of subjects caught on
film.
The pictures range from high school graduations, to family
reunions, to farming, to leisure, to funeral services. There are almost 2,000
images in this collection, and we have a DVD of the images available for
viewing by the public.

the Burroughs School educated and inspired the hearts and minds of Horry
County's youth.
We can see no reason to change a great tradition!
Our Facility
Horry County Council has given the museum the opportunity
to develop plans to renovate and relocate to the old Burroughs
School on 9th Ave. and Main Street within the Historic District
of Conway. The building is a historic treasure that will offer the
museum 28,000 sq. feet of space for exhibits, collections, and
programs. The community landmark, McCown Auditorium
with seating for 400 will also be part of the new museum
facility and will allow us to offer additional programs and
special events. We thank you for your advice and counsel as
we look towards our residents for financial support to
expand our museum space while we continue to fufill our
mission to the residents of Horry County to preserve, protect
and teach.
