2025 Memorial Day Tribute

Horry County Museum 805 Main Street, Conway, SC, United States

Veterans of the American Armed Forces, active-duty military, and the general public are invited to the 2025 Memorial Day Tribute at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 26th in McCown Auditorium at the Horry County Museum in Conway. The event is sponsored by Goldfinch Funeral Home, the Horry County Museum, HTC, and the United Bank Center for Military & Veteran Studies at Coastal Carolina University.
“Veterans Day honors our military veterans, Armed Forces Day honors active-duty military, and Memorial Day honors those Americans in uniform who sacrificed their lives for our country,” said Walter Hill, who is director of the Horry County Museum. “The annual Memorial Day Tribute is an event that enables all of us to take a moment and gratefully reflect on those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.”
The 2025 Memorial Day Tribute at McCown Auditorium is designed to honor Americans in uniform of all ages who sacrificed their lives in the service of their country, and will include a moment of silence, presentation of the national colors by a color guard, live patriotic music, and recognition of veterans by service branch and era. It also includes the screening of a new and locally produced documentary film: The Golden Boys: Heroism & Heartbreak in World War II America, which chronicles the story of the Norton twins of Horry County, who sacrificed their lives as bomber pilots in Europe during World War II.
“The story of “Hoagie’ and ‘Whack’ – the Norton twins -- is remarkable and very inspiring,” said Rod Gragg, who is the film’s producer. “It is a fitting reminder of the sacrifices made by American military personnel for our country, and underscores the truth of the honored saying – ‘Freedom is not free.’”
“We invite the general public to join veterans and active-duty military at the 2025 Memorial Day Tribute,” said Meghan Hayden, the president of Goldfinch Funeral Home. “It’s a meaningful way for us to remember those in uniform who gave all on our behalf, and it gives us an appropriate opportunity to express our gratitude to our veterans and active-duty military for their service.”
Seating at the 2025 Memorial Day Tribute will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. McCown Auditorium and the Horry County Museum are located at 805 Main Street in Conway. Admission to the event is free of charge.

Alan Todd to speak on Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project

Horry County Museum 805 Main Street, Conway, SC, United States

The Horry County Museum presents a program by Alan Todd, Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project, on Saturday, June 14th, at 1:00 PM. Horry County is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, which has led to unprecedented construction and demolition. As older structures are rapidly demolished and cleared for new construction, the local area’s inherently valuable used building materials, structural histories, and expert trade skills are unnecessarily lost to the landfill. In contrast, the economic model of deconstruction provides a ready solution to this unnecessary waste and loss. Deconstruction is the careful disassembly of structures, an alternative to traditional demolition. In this process, building materials can be salvaged and reused, histories researched and archived, and traditional skills revived for future generations. Alan Todd will discuss the process of establishing a deconstruction industry in our area and the environmental and economic benefits it brings.
Alan Todd is Executive Director of Conway Architectural Salvage and Heritage Project, a nonprofit organization that focuses on building material reuse and trades preservation. A professor at Coastal Carolina University and trained archaeologist, Alan's life's work culminates in saving old-growth lumber from landfills, archiving the histories of family homes, and reviving traditional building crafts through education and community development.
The program is free to the public and will be held in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway, SC 29526. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov. To view a full list of scheduled programs, visit the museum website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with When Rice Was King

Horry County Museum 805 Main Street, Conway, SC, United States

Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film tells the story of how rice became a major cash crop in South Carolina. The cultivation of rice in South Carolina began in the late 1600s. By the time of the American Revolution, it had created the largest concentration of wealth in the American colonies. The knowledge and labor of those enslaved from Africa’s Windward Coast were major factors in the making of this wealth. However, South Carolina’s rice culture experienced heavy tolls due to the Civil War, emancipation and hurricanes. The economic and social impact of the state’s rice culture created a legacy that remains today.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 18th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2025. For a list of films, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov.
