The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gullah Roots. This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, explores South Carolina’s ties with West Africa, educating viewers about Gullah heritage, including spiritual, musical and artistic traditions. A sequel to SCETV’s 1990 documentary Family Across the Sea, this film was produced by Betsy Newman and Xavier Blake, and directed, written and edited by Newman. The film aims to raise awareness about the Gullah Geechee community and its ties to West Africa. It also examines the challenges many in that community face today and the progress they have made since the first homecoming to Sierra Leone over 30 years ago.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 18th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Makin’ a Way Out of No Way-Modjeska Simkins: Portrait of the Humans Rights Activist.
Part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, this film tells the story of South Carolina human and civil rights matriarch, Modjeska Monteith Simkins. This classic Carolina story is a portrait of an activist who laid the groundwork for some of the most significant civil rights cases in US history.

Join us Saturday, February 28th, for a free 30 minute activity at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. Children will learn how scrap fabric was used to make bed and floor rugs in the past. They’ll also start their own piece to take home.

We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Join us on Tuesday, March 3rd at 11 AM as Certified Quilt Appraiser Brenda Grampsas shares a trunk show featuring quilts and a few garments made from or embellished with vintage/antique linens or lace.  This includes doilies, dresser scarves, embroidered pillow cases, hankies, tablecloths and other textile treasures we often inherit. These items are too precious to discard but what is to be done with them?  Inspiration is the goal.....  

Brenda Grampsas is an American Quilters Society Quilt Appraiser, certified in 2005.  Brenda has a lifetime of sewing and quilting experience with a passion for all things quilted.  Her experience in teaching the “how to” of quilting extends not only to adults but many years of quilting classes with children and teens.  Watching others catch the “quilt bug” through her shared trunk shows, lectures and workshops feeds the natural teacher in her.  She is inspired by quilts from many eras and is especially fascinated by scrap quilts because of their wide range of fabrics. Brenda is very involved in the restoration of quilts.  Teaching others the art of restoration has become advantageous due to the many requests for restoration service.

The 2026 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hearts & Hands: The Influence of Women & Quilts on American Society. This film presents a vital part of American history, the role played by women and their textiles in the nineteenth century’s great movements and events including the Civil War, the abolition of slavery, westward expansion, the suffrage and temperance movements. The film explores the astonishing lives and accomplishments of ordinary, often anonymous women as well as chronicling the lives of extraordinary individuals such as Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Keckley, Frances Willard and Abigail Scott Duniway

We’re celebrating textiles throughout March at the Horry County Museum! Stop by to hear from local quilters on a variety of topics. In addition to the free programming, you’ll have a chance to win a door prize at every event! Join us Thursday, March 5th at 1 PM as local quilter Jill Messier shows off a collection of quilts featuring Secret Window and Attic Window patterns. The quilts, many supplied by quilters in the Conway Quilt Guild, will feature panels made by fabric that were cut into strips or blocks.
Jill Messier moved to Conway from Enfield, Connecticut in 2018 and arrived two days before Hurricane Florence. She began quilting in the 1970s after visiting a neighbor who quilts. Messier used the book Lap Quilting by Georgie Bonesteel to create a quilt in the Grandmother’s Fan pattern. After preparing and sewing the quilt by hand, Messier soon found that she had a new hobby. She has currently finished nearly 100 quilts ranging in size from baby to king, with all but 2 being quilted by hand. Many quilts have been kept or gifted to friends and family, while some have won ribbons at shows. She also likes to use leftover material to create other items, such as origami butterflies, wallets, cozies, iPad covers and purses.

The L.W. Paul Living History Farm will host a hands-on workshop on indigo dyeing. The workshop will take place Friday, March 6th at 1 PM. Participants will learn about the history of indigo in South Carolina and have the opportunity to design and dye their own handkerchief. Space is limited, pre-registration is required.
