The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with South Carolina Ghosts & Legends Vol. III. This 30 minute film explores two famous ghosts with roots on Pawley’s Island, “The Gray Man” and “Alice of the Hermitage.” The program also investigates “Bubba the Ghost” at the South Carolina State Museum and the ghosts of the University of South Carolina’s Longstreet Theatre. The Carolina Stories crew travels to Charleston to unearth tales of buried treasure and other legendary pirate stories.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Snowbird Cherokees. Deep in the mountains of western North Carolina is the isolated Cherokee community of Snowbird. The ancestors of these Native Americans managed to flee U.S. soldiers in 1838 when the Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. This film explores the daily lives and culture of the present-day Cherokees, while looking into the fascinating history and culture of these Native Americans.

Join us Saturday, November 8th, for a free 30 minute activity at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. Veteran’s Day is right around the corner and we’re showing our gratitude to those who have served in the military by decorating quilt squares. These squares will be sewn into quilts and given to local veterans through the Quilts of Valor Foundation, all ages are welcome to participate.

The public is invited to view a special Quilts of Valor presentation at the Horry County Museum. Quilts made especially for local veterans will be presented by the Conway Quilt Guild Quilts of Valor Group on Saturday, November 8th at 11 AM. Quilts to be awarded can be viewed at the Horry County Museum starting October 25th.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) is to cover all service members and veterans, touched by war, with a comforting and healing quilt. Since 2003, the foundation, now a national organization, has awarded over 400,000 quilts to veterans throughout the country. The Conway Quilt Guild has been recognized as one of the newest QOV groups, seeking to expand recognition to veterans in the northern and western parts of Horry County. “Horry County Museum to host screening and discussion of Killers of the Flower Moon”
In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, The Horry County Museum, in partnership with the South Carolina Commission for Community Advancement and Engagement, will host a screening of the film Killers of the Flower Moon. After the viewing, the audience is invited to participate in a Q&A discussion about the film and Native American history and culture within South Carolina. The screening will be held on November 8th at 2 PM at the Horry County Museum.

The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Courage in Korea: A Soldier’s Story. The documentary presents the little-known story of the Korean War through the experiences of the late Sergeant Paul Thompkins, a Korean War veteran from Conway, South Carolina. Thompkins, who became a local pastor after the war, was engaged in combat in Korea with the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division, was captured when U.S. lines were overrun by the Chinese army, and spent more than two-and-a-half years as a prisoner-of-war in North Korea’s Communist prison camps.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, November 12th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

See history come to life at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm! A large part of farm life in Horry County involved old-fashioned syrup making. Each fall, sugar cane was gathered from the field and taken to a local cane mill where the juice was squeezed from the stalk. Cooking down the raw juice into sweet cane syrup became a celebration and gathering for the community and is a tradition that is carried on each year at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us Saturday, November 15th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm as staff and volunteers demonstrate the process of making cane syrup and a variety of other traditional activities including children’s games, cooking on a wood burning stove, and more!

This film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, examines why African-Americans supported the war effort and how they were disappointed by the response to their efforts; women’s roles and how the war played a part in the women’s movement; military camps and what they meant for South Carolina cities; and how the influenza epidemic in 1918 impacted the state.

The Horry County Museum presents a concert by the Saltwater Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, November 22nd at 1 PM. Comprised of volunteer members and performers, Saltwater Chamber Orchestra boasts a robust season of concerts with quality music performance. The group began as a club in the Coastal Carolina OLLI program in Myrtle Beach, SC, and is now an independent chamber string orchestra. Their repertoire consists of classical and show/pop selections, as well as selections for various holidays. Throughout the years since its founding, the organization has performed along the Grand Strand coast of South Carolina, sharing the comforting sounds of strings in the palmetto community. Venues have included churches, schools, libraries, and museums, as part of an ongoing concert series, and for educational, charitable, and civic events. The 2025 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Patriot Dream: The Story of the Pilgrims. This locally produced documentary tells the story of the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, whose arrival in America in 1620 shaped the founding of the nation. Shot on location in the Pilgrim country of Great Britain and in the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts, it traces the extraordinary story of the Pilgrims from their troubles in 17th century England through their escape to Holland and their dramatic voyage to America.

The Horry County Museum presents a free Christmas concert by the local group Ukes By the Sea on Saturday, December 6th, at 1:00 PM. Ukes By The Sea is a light-hearted ukulele band based in Myrtle Beach, SC. Members of the band range in age from 11 to 93. Their mission is to share joy through happy music.
