Soldier Stories: Valor in Vietnam

The Horry County Museum will host a showing of the film Soldier Stories: Valor in Vietnam on Saturday, September 17th at 1 PM. This locally produced film chronicles the common experiences of Americans in uniform during the Vietnam War through historic combat footage, period photography, and personal commentary by local Vietnam veterans and others.

Stan McKenzie: The Joys of Growing Citrus & Other Fruits

The L.W. Paul Living History Farm and The Homesteaders of Horry County present a free program on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:30 PM by Stan McKenzie on the joys of growing citrus and other fruits.
Stan McKenzie is known throughout South Carolina for his expertise in citrus and is the owner of McKenzie Farms Nursery in Scranton, SC. Formed in early 2022, The Homesteaders of Horry County is a group of individuals who enjoy learning and living self-sufficiently and sharing knowledge.

Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century

The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the South Carolina ETV film, Hurricane Hugo: Storm of the Century. Hurricane Hugo made landfall north of Charleston sometime around midnight September 22, 1989. A category 4 storm, Hugo caused significant damage along the South Carolina coast. The Grand Strand saw 12 foot high walls of water and almost every business along the coast had damage or was destroyed, including three piers in Myrtle Beach. It’s estimated that at the time, Hugo caused around $7 billion worth of damage to the area. This film explores the impact of Hugo five years after it hit South Carolina.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 21st, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Hard to Say Goodbye: The Official Documentary of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion

The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Hard to Say Goodbye: The Official Documentary of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. For almost 100 years the Myrtle Beach Pavilion played a beloved role in Myrtle Beach history. From its origins as a meeting place and dance hall to the arrival of famed general manager Earl Husted and its expansion into a world famous amusement park, this official documentary, commissioned by park owner Burroughs & Chapin Company and accomplished in union with Myrtle Beach’s award-winning Stages Video Productions, captures the magic and memories that made the Myrtle Beach Amusement Park a family favorite for generations.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 28th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Museum Matinee: Gumption, Grit & Glory-The Battle for Kings Mountain

The 2022 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Gumption, Grit & Glory: The Battle of Kings Mountain. Shot on site at Kings Mountain National Historic Park, this locally produced documentary tells how the ‘Over-Mountain Men’, a group of Scots-Irish volunteers from the backcountry of the Carolinas, Virginia and Tennessee, helped to change the course of the American Revolution.

The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, October 5th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Free Children’s Program at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm

Join us for free 30 minute Saturday activities at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited to help ensure social distancing. On October 8th children will learn about the importance of hogs on the family farm. They’ll also create a model of the anatomy of a hog using modeling clay.

Horry County Museum Lecture Series: Local Superstitions and Ghost Stories

With Halloween on the horizon, October is prime time for spooky stories. The Horry/Georgetown Area has a long history and, with the passage of time, stories are bound to arise. Whether you’ve heard about the supposed haunting of local landmarks or just noticed a lot of blue ceilings on porches, there is history and folklore that runs deep in many of these local legends. Join us to learn more about some of these local ghost stories and superstitions. Join us on October 8th at 1 pm to learn about some of these local hauntings and superstitions with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy.
Abigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for 5 years before joining the Horry County Museum Staff as the Technical Assistant in 2020. She has recently been promoted to Curator as of 2022.
