Join us for free 30 minute activities at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited. On July 13th children will learn about bats and the important role they play in our environment.

Waves of Change: The Story of Myrtle Beach, SC

The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Waves of Change: The Story of Myrtle Beach, SC. Written and produced by Barbara Stokes, this series follows almost a century in the history, development, and people of the sleepy beach village that became a national tourist destination. It explores how the community of Myrtle Beach has dealt with two major goals: to bring people to the beach and to build a hometown. The film also explores some of the major setbacks to development as well as the forces and people that propelled its growth. And it discusses the next wave of change-continued increase in growth and the challenges that come with that growth.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, July 19th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Local Plants & Wildlife through the Lens of Steve Berkowitz

The Horry County Museum presents a free program on July 22nd at 1 PM on local plants and wildlife. Join us as retired CCU professor Steve Berkowitz shares images and videos of local wildlife including birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and flowers that he has collected from natural areas throughout Horry and adjacent Counties.

Berkowitz completed his graduate training and thesis work was at Texas A&M University, in biological oceanography, specializing in zooplankton and Antarctic krill. He was hired as the Assistant Director of the Center of Marine and Wetland Studies at CCU in 1991. After some years, he transitioned to a full-time position as Lab Coordinator and Senior Instructor from which he retired in 2011. He has participated in dozens of research expeditions in Antarctica, the Gulf of Mexico and the Western Atlantic Ocean. He also spent five years as an environmental consultant, based out of Virginia and Florida

Rebels & Redcoats: American Crisis 1776

The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the PBS Film Series Rebels & Redcoats: American Crisis 1776. In the second installment, Washington is forced out of New York. His army begins to desert him, until a daring raid across a frozen river gives him victory at Trenton. But the British still seem to be masters in this war, capturing the great Fort Ticonderoga.
“With vivid dramatizations of battles, eyewitness accounts, original documents and paintings, Rebels & Redcoats tells the untold story of the American Revolution. Richard Holmes, a renowned British military historian, presents the series. He focuses on the military struggles, soldiers, leaders, and tactics of this great conflict. It is told from an unusual point of view, that of the British losers. Yet it also explores painful conflicts within the American people themselves.”

The Morris Brothers & Dixie Station to perform traditional bluegrass concert at the Horry County Museum

The Horry County Museum presents a free traditional bluegrass concert by The Morris Brothers and Dixie Station on July 29th at 1:00 PM.
The Morris Brothers have been playing music together for 49 years. Originally from West Virginia, they now reside in the Aynor/Cool Springs area of South Carolina. The brothers started playing bluegrass when they were young boys growing up in the hollows of West Virginia. They enjoy playing bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel and play regularly in Horry County. Band members include Mike Morris of Aynor, SC on vocals and banjo, Matt Morris from Cool Springs, SC on vocals and guitar, William Hardee from Loris, SC on vocals and fiddle, Jason Todd from Loris, SC on mandolin, and Tammy Holt of Conway, SC on the bass.

South Carolina Hall of Fame Film Series produced by SCETV

The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with an installment of the South Carolina Hall of Fame Film Series produced by SCETV, featuring inductees from the late 20th Century.
Established in 1973, The South Carolina Hall of Fame, located in Myrtle Beach, inducts one deceased and one contemporary honoree each year. It is by law the “official” Hall of Fame for South Carolina. There are nearly 100 members of the South Carolina Hall of Fame, each of whom has made outstanding contributions to South Carolina’s heritage, history, and progress.
Biographies of late 20th century inductees include Anne W. Richardson, Robert Marvin, Matthew Perry, Ernest Hollings, John West, Robert McNair, Carlisle Floyd, John McKissick, and James Edwards.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 2nd, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
