Junior Curators continues at the Horry County Museum on Saturday, March 23rd from 9 AM-10 AM. This free, family friendly, program is open to children ages 5 and older and will teach children the history and natural history of Horry County through hands on activities. In this session, children will learn the importance of piecing objects back together and how that can give us clues to the past. Participants will also test their knowledge and try to guess what certain artifacts are. Parents must remain with children. The People Who Take up Serpents

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film, The People Who Take up Serpents. A classic documentary shot in 1974 when Stan Woodward served as Filmmaker in residence at the South Carolina Arts Commission. He headed a groundbreaking program that funded SC filmmakers making their own personal works. Gretchen Robinson’s film on the story of the members of the Holiness Church of God in Jesus’ Name in Greenville, SC-a snake handling church-tells the story of how they responded after a sister church in Newport, Tennessee was padlocked by order of the State Attorney General after two preachers had died from strychnine while trying to prove the authenticity of their faith.

Junior Farmers is a free, family friendly program open to children ages 5-10 and focuses on the traditions and workings of an early 1900s farm family. Join us on March 30th from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM to help plant sweet corn. Maximum of 15 children, parents must remain with children. Sawmill Saturday at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm

Experience life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us for Sawmill Saturday from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM on March 30th to see the sawmill in operation. There were, and still are, a lot of trees being grown in Horry County for timber production. In the early twentieth century, most communities had a sawmill in the area to get the trees from their forest turned into boards. Farm staff and designated volunteers will operate the sawmill and discuss its set-up after it was moved to the farm.

Carolina Stories: Finding Clovis

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Finding Clovis. This 30 minute film takes viewers on an archeological adventure at the Topper dig site in Allendale County, South Carolina. Famous for Clovis and pre-Clovis artifacts, there is recent evidence that may support the theory that a comet suddenly wiped out the Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. World renowned scientists offer their opinions about these significant first Americans, where they came from, how they lived, and what may have been their fate.

Cooking Demonstration

Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on April 4th from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM for a cooking demonstration on the wood burning stove. Wayne will demonstrate a variety of ways that chicken would have been prepared in order to make the most use of the bird to feed what would have been a large family.

A free, hour long, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration.
